Infertility Q&A

What is infertility?

In medical terms, infertility is the inability to get pregnant after 12 months of trying, or six months of trying, for women 35 years of age and older. Women who can get pregnant but are unable to stay pregnant full-term also struggle with infertility.

Infertility is common, affecting about 10% of women of childbearing age. Though women often feel responsible when struggling with infertility, it’s a common condition in men.

What causes infertility in women?

In women, infertility most often results from problems with ovulation. Every month, one of your ovaries releases an egg in anticipation of fertilization by sperm, leading to pregnancy.

Women who struggle with infertility tend to have an irregular menstrual cycle, which means they may not ovulate monthly. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common cause of infertility in which women may have eight or fewer periods a year.

Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is also a common cause of infertility in women. With POI, your ovaries stop ovulating before age 40.

Women may also struggle with infertility because of structural problems related to their reproductive organs. That may include scarring of the fallopian tubes from endometriosis or fibroids in the uterus.

What happens during an infertility evaluation?

When you visit Ganesh OBGYN for an infertility evaluation, you can expect a thorough, patient-centered exam. The skilled gynecologists aim to get to the root cause of your infertility to provide the most effective treatment.

Your provider reviews your gynecological, medical, and sexual history and performs a physical and pelvic exam. They may also run lab work and perform ultrasound testing to confirm or rule out the cause of your infertility.

The experts at Ganesh OBGYN also ask about your partner’s medical and sexual history and may suggest infertility testing to check sperm health.

How is infertility treated?

Treatment for infertility depends on the underlying cause. The first line of treatment may include medication that increases ovulation.

Your provider at Ganesh OBGYN may also prescribe medication to treat any underlying gynecological condition affecting your ability to conceive, such as metformin for PCOS.

Your provider may also recommend intrauterine insemination (IUI) when taking ovulation-stimulating medications. During the procedure, they inject specially prepared semen into your uterus during ovulation to improve the chances of conception.

Ganesh OBGYN also offers laparoscopic surgery to remove fibroids or scar tissue caused by endometriosis to treat infertility related to these gynecological problems.
